24/7 Emergency Service
We all know what an extremely dry season does to our grass, plants, and trees. But do we all know how extremely high temperatures can affect the health of our trees? Southern Star Tree is here to explain. High temperatures play a major role in how healthy or unhealthy your trees will be. Like most plants or flowers, trees need some extra attention and care when the temperatures reach a high number.
Depending on how many trees you have on your property and what kind of trees you have, you may need to up the maintenance and care you give them. If you used to water them once a day and prune them once a week, you may need to increase that to watering them 2-3 times a day and pruning them 2-3 times a week.
If you want to learn more about how hot weather and your trees have a direct correlation and what you can do to help your trees, keep reading about how to provide proper tree care!
How Do High Temperatures Affect Your Trees?
When the temperatures reach a certain degree, it can reduce your tree’s photosynthetic rates. This imbalance results since the carbs your trees produce are used faster than your trees can replace them. Think of it this way – since our trees can’t produce oxygen at as fast of a rate as they normally can, we are creating an imbalance in our environment. They don’t have anything to intake or essential nourish them, they can help provide us with the oxygen we need. This isn’t to say they don’t produce enough, it’s just at a much slower rate.
Another way high temperatures affect your trees is by the amount of water they lose. Your tree’s leaves are made of these things called stomates, which release water particles as the tree grows. Combine high temperatures with no rain, and your tree is constantly losing water through its stomates, creating an even higher demand for water for your tree’s roots.
Lastly, the cellular membrane can become unstable in your tree when the temperatures are high and there is little to no rainfall. This can cause ion leakage within your tree’s leaf’s cellular structure – essentially causing your leaves to become unhealthy and die.
There are many different ways you can prepare and provide tree care when the temperatures are higher than normal. You’ll want to make sure your trees are planted in the proper soil that will provide them with the essential nutrients they need. You need to make sure you are watering your trees more than you normally would, maybe you water them 2-3 times a day rather than once a day.
