24/7 Emergency Service
The outside of your home is the first thing and the last thing people see – you want to take the time to make it look nice. One way to add curb appeal to your home is to add things like shrubs and make sure they are cared for at all times. Shrubs can come with flowers on them, or no flowers – that’s a personal preference. But with some easy and daily maintenance, your shrubs can turn your bland home into something spectacular! As a tree company, Southern Star Tree has seen so many homeowners neglect their shrubs and think they will survive on their own.
Your shrubs need food, water, and regular care just like you do. If you’re new to planting and taking care of shrubs, we have some tips and techniques to share with you to make sure your shrubs are always in tip-top shape!
When it comes to actually planting shrubs, there is a right way and there is a wrong way. You want to start by heading to your local garden shop and talk to a staff member and tell them about the area where you’re planning on putting your shrub. They’ll want to know what kind of soil it’s going in, how much sun and shade it gets, and how much water the area gets in a given day. When it comes to tree and shrub care, you can always ask the team at Southern Star Tree! Before you plant your shrub you want to properly prep the area with good soil and fertilizer. Make sure it has plenty of room to grow and make sure to keep it watered.
Once you plant your shrub your work is far from over. The first couple of months after planting your shrub are probably the most important. You will need to lightly prune your shrubs and pick off leaves or buds that are dead. You’ll need to use hand clippers or hedge trimmers. Whether you do this once a week or once a month, pruning your shrub will help keep it healthy so it can reach its full potential.
Water is a necessary thing for the success of any shrub growing. If you can’t go days without water, neither should your shrubs. Your shrub is a living thing, so you need to make sure it gets water daily. You want to soak the soil surrounding your shrub and if you can, water it for 5-10 minutes. In order for the roots to get the proper moisture, the water needs to be able to seep deep into the soil.
Lastly, you need to feed your shrubs just like you would feel yourself. You want to make sure you don’t put any kind of fertilizer around your shrub. Rather, feed it with things like mulch or compost.
